The Camdenton R-III School Districts’ Speech and Debate squad had several students who started off strong for the season. Kickapoo and Glendale High Schools in Springfield have hosted the opening tournament of the season for decades and Camdenton had several students perform well at the 28-school tournament, held October 11-12. Camdenton followed up by taking a small group to Willard High School on October 18-19, for Willard High School’s first full Debate and Individual Events tournament.
“We saw some things we really need to work on, and some things that we are really excited about. Our debate needs some work, but we saw some significant improvement from the first week to the next out of several novices. The potential in Duo interpretation is quite good, and returning National qualifier Alexis Lumley is rapidly getting her Dramatic Interpretation back in stride in addition to her obvious success with Nick in Duo. It was quite exciting to see two different students take first in Novice Student Congress for us on two different weekends. As marching band winds down and we get some of those kids back into Speech and Debate, we will add numbers and quality, so I look for a very interesting season ahead.” commented, head coach Tom Martin.
