The Eldon Mustangs' win streak continues for another week as the team defeated the visiting Osage Indians last Friday night by a score of 56-38.
Fans were in for a roller coaster ride at this match, as the two conference (and district) rivals went head-to-head in a high-scoring shootout, with both teams finishing the game with a combined 903 offensive yards and 14 touchdowns.
Neither team got off to a great start, as the Mustangs quickly went three-and-out to start the game, but Osage's first drive resulted in a fumble after just three plays as the ball popped loose from Seth Crooks' hands in Eldon territory.
School of the Osage got off to a better start on their second drive, working their way down the field with three big pass plays and drawing first blood with a touchdown pass from Austin Riley to Collin Samuelson from 7-yards out to give the Indians a 6-0 lead with less than six minutes left in the first quarter.
Eldon answered one minute later with a 28-yard touchdown run by senior running back Raymond Kwok, and with the extra point by Levi Shinn sailing through the uprights, the Mustangs stole the lead with a 7-6 score.
Eldon would score again with two and a half minutes left on the clock in the first quarter, this time on a 48-yard touchdown run by Wyatt Greenwalt, giving the Mustangs a 14-6 lead.
Osage managed to close the gap after two minutes of play in the second quarter on a 7-yard pass from Riley to Dylan Jeffries, but could not convert the two-point conversion to tie the game.
The two teams continued to battle it out throughout the first half, but not until there was one minute left on the clock was either team able to score. With 1:01 left in the half, Kwok powered his way into the end zone to score from the 1-yard line, and the Mustangs went in to the half leading 21-12.
The Indians came out strong in the second half, driving down the field to score with a 3-yard run by Seth Crooks, and Jake Ulmer's extra point pulled the Indians within two of the Mustangs.
Two minutes later, and the Indians retook the lead with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Riley to Ulmer to lead the Mustangs 26-21 after Collin Samuelson picked off Eldon's Wyatt Greenwalt to take back the ball.
Eldon's next drive resulted in a punt, but Dalton Lister intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. Minutes later, the Indians were forced to punt, and the Mustangs scored on just three plays, with Greenwalt bbreaking off a 35-yard run for a touchdown.
Osage would bounce back on the next drive, with Riley completing a 15-yard pass to Dylan Jeffries, followed by a 50-yard touchdown pass to Samuelson with 1:15 left in the third quarter.
Page 2 of 2 - The fourth quarter began with Eldon leading 34-32, but the Mustangs took advantage of the tired Indians squad, and scored twice in the fourth before Osage could answer. Dalton Lister and Raymond Kwok both found the end zone for the Mustangs, giving them a 49-32 lead before Riley found Ulmer from 9-yards out to answer.
With 3:53 left in the game, the Mustangs laid on the final score with a 66-yard touchdown run by Greenwalt, which would be the game-winning score as the Mustangs defeated the Indians 56-38.
Osage's Austin Riley won the battle through the air, completing 29 of his 48 attempts for 430 yards and five touchdowns, but was picked off by the Mustangs' Lister twice. Osage's offensive line, however, only gave up one sack to the Mustangs. Wyatt Greenwalt threw just five times, completing two passes for 24 yards and an interception.
Osage's receiving corps finished the day with three players in triple digits, with Jeffries catching 10 for 143 and a TD, Ulmer bringing in 9 for 126 and 2 TD and Samuelson reeling in 6 for 100 and 2 TD. Crooks carried the ball 9 times for 9 yards and a touchdown.
Greenwalt led the Mustangs in the rushing attack with 160 yards on 13 carries for three touchdowns, while Kwok finished with 130 on 23 for 3 TD and Lister ran for 106 on 16 carries for one touchdown.
Eldon is now 4-2 on the season, and will take on the Hallsville Indians next, also 4-2. Osage's matchup this week will be a tough one, as they take on the 5-1 California Pintos.
