  • As the Pride of the Lake Marching Band heads to competition in Broken Arrow, Okla. Saturday, assistant director Mike Fenn reflected on this year’s marching band season.
Q: Describe this year's program? What can audience members expect?
A: This year's program is entitled "Somewhere in Time".  Much of the music and the "story" of the show is taken from the 1980 movie of the same name.  The show contains a great mix of both beautiful slow pieces and energetic and exciting music.  It features a flute soloist, an alto saxophone soloist, and a mellophone soloist.  Band members and guard members will be dancing together under the 18 moveable gazebos we put on the field.
Q: What is new for the Pride of the Lake Marching Band this year?
A: The biggest new thing for us this year are our new uniforms.  I think the crowds will be impressed with how good the band looks this season with a brand new look.  There is more black in the uniform than before, and tall purple plumes for the hat.  These changes make the band look very sleek and tall.
Q: What are your expectations for the season?
A: As with every season, we know that if our kids put forth their best effort, they will be tremendously successful.  Each year we step up the level of our competition.  This year, three of our four contests will be with bands from across the country.
Q: What is the student's favorite piece that they perform this year?
A: They don't usually have a particular favorite piece for the marching band.  They each have their own preference about which part of the show they like, but I'm sure it's different for each kid.
    Q: Upcoming contests?
A: Our first contest was Sept. 21 in Kettering, Ohio.  The next is Oct. 5 in Broken Arrow, Okla.  Oct. 12 is at Missouri State University in Springfield, and our final contest is Oct. 19 in St. Louis at the Bands of America Super Regional.
