Lake of the Ozarks boaters are asked to please keep a watchful eye out for kayakers who are participating in the 2 Dam Days International Flatwater Championship this Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29. The kayaks will be seen from the 90 to the 34.5 mile mark on Saturday and from the 34.5 to the zero mile mark on Sunday.
Boaters are urged to please travel as slow as possible on the opposite side of the lake when passing the smaller vessels, and to please go to idle speed when near the kayaks. The 2 Dam Days Extreme 90 is a grueling 90-mile marathon on flatwater that will test the physical limits of the athletes, and the less wake they encounter, the better it will be for them.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and 40 safety boats will accompany the paddlers in a concerted safety effort.
Former Kansas City Royals pitcher competing in race
As of Thursday, Sept. 26 more than 50 competitors, including Olympic champions from around the world, both men and women, have registered for the race, and more are expected. Kevin Appier is registered in the Extreme 90 race. Appier is a former highly successful right-handed Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, New York Mets and Anaheim Angels.
Cheer the racers on!
The public is invited to honk and cheer the racers on as they pass! Everyone is invited to an awards ceremony and dinner at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Captain Ron's Bar and Grill for the short races, and from 1-5 p.m. at Beavers at the Dam for the longer competitions. There will be live entertainment by Shawn C and an authentic German Octoberfest Dinner at Beavers at the Dam. There will also be several drawings, including a raffle for a new, sit upon kayak with fishing options that is open to the public. That raffle is $5 per ticket and tickets will be available at Captain Ron's on Saturday and at Beavers at the Dam on Sunday. Everyone is invited to come and cheer in the racers at the finish line seen from Beavers at the Dam on Sunday. Saturday's finish line and racers can be seen at Captain Ron's.
2 Dam Days is sponsored by the Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance, LOWA, in an effort to spotlight the Lake of the Ozarks internationally, extend the tourist season, increase awareness of clean water and the sport of paddling and raise funds to help keep our healthy Lake healthy.
