Individuals who have lung disease don’t have to face it alone.
Lake Regional Health System hosts a Better Breathers support group for individuals with lung disease, such as COPD. The group’s fall kick off meeting is scheduled 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18. Meetings will be held the third Wednesday of each month in the Cardiac Rehab conference room, located on the second floor of the hospital.
Lake Regional’s Jennifer Newman, R.N., CVRN, CEN, will facilitate the meetings. Guest speaker Brian Grawer from Baxter Healthcare will provide the first meeting’s topic: Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Testing, a genetic condition that may result in lung or liver disease.
Common signs of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency are shortness of breath, wheezing, chronic bronchitis, recurring chest colds and year-round allergies.
“It’s important that patients with lung conditions get the education and support needed and don’t try to just live with their condition,” Newman said. “This group provides a support system coupled with regular education that can be vital to overall quality of life.”
Lunch will be provided at each meeting. For more information, call 573-302-2282.
