The Kansas City Chiefs are 2 and 0 after hanging on for dear life to beat the Dallas Cowboys yesterday 17 to 16. The Chiefs defense continues to play well and the Chiefs offense is still a work in progress. My main concern with the Chiefs offense at this point is that Alex Smith their starting quarterback appears to be trying to do everything and the rest of the offense appears to be willing to let him do that. This strategy if it doesn’t change could lead to tremendous wear and tear on Smith assuming he is able to continue at his current pace without getting injured. The Chiefs need to keep in mind that their backup QB’s are not anywhere close to Smith’s level as far as I’m concerned and can’t do half the things he did yesterday. That all being said, the Chiefs have won their first two games which hasn’t happened in a long time. The Chiefs have a short week as they travel to Philadelphia to play the Eagles Thursday night in what will be a really strong test for the Chiefs defense. The Eagles play at a manic pace and the Chiefs defense will constantly have to be on their toes. The Eagles defense doesn’t appear to be very good so hopefully the Chiefs offense can capitalize on that.
The St. Louis Rams dug a hole for themselves early and weren’t able to fully recover from that in the second half and lost a tough one to the Atlanta Falcons yesterday. The Rams defense appeared to struggle mightily in the first half as the Falcons came out fast and scored early and often. The Rams did mount a furious comeback in the second half but came up a few points short.
The Truman State Bulldogs gave an excellent accounting of themselves at Grand Valley State on Saturday losing to a very good Grand Valley State team 31 to 16. The first half was pretty evenly fought before Grand Valley State was able to put a little distance between themselves and the Bulldogs. This was most likely the best team the Bulldogs will play all year and I thought they played very well. Offensively Conrad Schottel had another good game and the defense looked to have improved from the first game to the second. All in all, I think there are many more positives than negatives coming out of the game. Truman State returns home on Saturday night for a game with William Penn.
The Kirksville High School Tigers lost to the Moberly Spartans 28 to 12 on Friday night. This was another one of those games where the first half was fairly even with the Spartans able to build up a bigger lead in the second half. The Spartans are a very good team and I thought the Tigers played reasonably well against them. KHS is back on the road this week, we’ll have more on that game later in the week.
The St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates are once again tied for the lead in the National League Central after the Cardinals took two out of three from the Seattle Mariners while the Pirates were doing the same with the Chicago Cubs. After winning in ten innings in thrilling fashion on Friday night the Cardinals came out flat on Saturday and were not able to do much at all offensively. They made up for it yesterday as they put up nine runs against the Mariners. The Cardinals are in Denver to begin a series with the Colorado Rockies tonight. Coors Field has not been overly kind to the Cardinals over the years so they are really going to have to step up their intensity if they want to hang on to first place in the NL Central.
The Kansas City Royals didn’t do themselves any favors over the weekend as they lost two out of three to the Detroit Tigers. They didn’t really hurt themselves that much in the standings but certainly didn’t help themselves either. The chances of them grabbing the final wild card spot continue to dwindle and at times this weekend they looked like a team who knew that.
Matt Kenseth ended a week of turmoil for NASCAR and a long rain delay to win the Geico 400 in Joliet, IL yesterday. I’m not sure exactly what that does to the points standing as as I gave up on figuring that out several weeks ago but I’m assuming it didn’t hurt him any. NASCAR has made such a debacle out of the Chase for the cup that is has become virtually meaningless.
We’ll try to be back on Wednesday with another blog. This is a very busy week for us on several fronts but we’ll try to get one written early Wednesdaymorning as we continue to try and keep track of all the goings on in the wide world of sports. Thanks as always for checking out this and all the other blogs on the site and remember your feedback is always welcome.
