First woman elected to both US houses of Congress

Margaret Chase Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in a special election on June 3, 1940, to replace her decreased husband. She was reelected to the House until 1948. On September 13, 1948, Smith was elected to the US Senate.

Smith was the first woman from Maine to serve in either US house of Congress, and was the first woman from any state to serve in both US houses of Congress.
