Eat Well, Be Well
If you have diabetes, choosing and preparing foods that are low in sugar, fat and sodium can be a real challenge. University of Missouri Extension in Camden County is offering a series of classes for people with diabetes and their families and friends. This program teaches the many aspect of diabetes self-care with a strong focus on nutrition.
Eat Well, Be Well with Diabetes is a five-session class designed to teach people with diabetes about healthy food choices and meal planning. The emphasis is on managing blood sugar to prevent complications, meal planning using carbohydrate counting and the plate method, physical activity, and diabetes self-management techniques. Each session will feature a healthy dish with the recipes available to participants. One session will include a grocery tour to highlight healthy and diabetic-friendly items.
The five-session program will be held from Sept. 26 to Oct. 24 (five consecutive Thursdays) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the conference room at Osage Beach Hy-Vee. Pre-registration is required by Tuesday, September 24. The charge for the class is $25 for one participant or $40 for a couple sharing one set of handouts. This program is not intended to provide individualized meal plans, nutrition counseling, or medical advice for participants nor is it meant to replace the diabetes education that is provided by qualified health professionals.
Stay Strong, Stay Healthy
University of Missouri Extension will be offering the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Program, an exercise program for middle-aged and older adults instructing proper technique and guidance on strength (weight) training. The goal of this program is to implement a safe strength training program so participants will become stronger, feel better, and maintain their independence throughout life. Participants will also learn balance and flexibility activities.
The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy was developed by Dr. Miriam Nelson and colleagues at Tufts University. The program is research-based and developed from the Strong Women Stay Young project developed by Dr. Nelson. Strength (weight) training in adults aids in increasing muscle mass, enhancing strength and balance, increasing bone density, decreasing arthritic symptoms, and improving glucose control and lipid profile. This program carries very little risk to the participants.
The 10-week Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program will be offered in Osage Beach at the Quail’s Nest Inn and Suites meeting room. The classes will meet on Mondays from October 7 to December 16. The advanced class will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The beginning class will be from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. The class fee is $25 per person. Registration is required and classes fill up quickly so register early.
