What a difference three days makes. In Friday’s blog it appeared the St. Louis Cardinals had seen the last of first place and were headed for third place in the National League Central. Then they swept the Pittsburgh Pirates and did so in dominating fashion and now find themselves a game and a half in front of the Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds and are in sole possession of first place. Just when you think the Cardinals are headed down they come right back up. Friday night’s score was not indicative of how dominating the Cardinals were as they scored twelve runs against the Pirates but then had to hang on as Jake Westbrook nearly took away Joe Kelly’s brilliant pitching outing. I did not see Saturday night’s game because I was at the Truman game but yesterday saw the Cardinals put up 9 runs and Michael Wacha pitched brilliantly for seven innings. The Cardinals are off today before beginning a three game series with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Kansas City Royals took two out of three from the Detroit Tigers over the weekend and are now only three and a half games out for the final American League wild card spot. The Royals have a very tough stretch of games though on the road at Cleveland and Detroit so things aren’t going to be easy for them. I still don’t think they can get that final wild card spot but they have sure put up a strong fight for it.
A new era of Chiefs football began yesterday as the Kansas City Chiefs easily defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 28 to 2 yesterday. The Chiefs offense looked good the first half but is still very much a work in progress and were held scoreless the second half. The Chiefs defense looked very impressive and that may prove to be the Chiefs strength this year. I don’t think you can really judge the Chiefs all that much by this game as Jacksonville is a team that quite honestly will be lucky to win a single game this year but the Chiefs team we saw on the field yesterday was far and away the best team they have put on the field in a number of years. This team came ready to play football and they definitely opened some eyes yesterday. The real test of where the Chiefs are may come this weekend when the Dallas Cowboys come to town. We’ll have much more on that as the week progresses.
The St. Louis Rams got off the right track as well yesterday as they defeated the Arizona Cardinals in a nail biter. The Rams are improved as wel and appear to have some defensive issues but certainly appear to be a much better team than the one that took the field last year.
The Missouri Tigers struggled to a victory over Toledo on Saturday. I wasn’t overly impressed with what I saw on Saturday as I didn’t think they played all that well on defense and their offense looked lost a couple of times. I also didn’t think they had a good game plan going in and I question why James Franklin was not in there for the entire game. Missouri has two weeks to prepare for their first road game of the year at Indiana on September 21.
The Truman State Bulldogs hung on to win a shootout against Southwest Baptist on Saturday night as the Bearcats made a furious charge in the fourth quarter but came up three points short. The Bulldogs offense looked great in my opinion and their veteran leadership really came through as a school field goal record was set which is pretty impressive given the number of outstanding field goal kickers Truman has had in the past. The offense looked outstanding and I can’t wait to see what kind of numbers they put up as the season progresses. The defense still needs some work but they will get there. This week the Bulldogs are on the road to play Grand Valley State one of the top teams in Division II football so that will be a very strong test for the young defense.
The Kirksville High School Tigers did not have much fun in Chillicothe Friday night as they were totally dominated on both sides of the ball. They have another tough test this week as Moberly brings its high scoring offense to town on Friday night. We will have more about that later in the week as well.
Carl Edwards won Saturday night’s NASCAR race in Richmond and is currently the points leader as the Chase for the Cup begins this weekend with ASCARR’s race in Joliet, IL.
Serena Williams completed her domination of the U.S. Open women’s tennis field by easily disposing of Victoria Azarenka in the finals yesterday. This is Williams fifth U.S. Open title I believe.
We’ll be back on Wednesday with another blog as we try desperately to keep track of all the stuff going on in the sports world right now. As I have said before this is my favorite time of the year and there is certainly no shortage of things to talk about. Please check out all the other blogs on this site and thank you for taking time to read this one.
Have a great week!
