  • A new physician is coming to Westlake Medical Center just as long time clinic director Dr. Kenneth Derrington returns after being injured in a bicycle accident.
Derrington is back seeing patients full time after recovering from 10 broken ribs and a ruptured spleen as a result of the mid-July accident.
Ismael Aguilo-Rodriguez, M.D., has agreed to join the primary care clinic in Laurie and will begin seeing patients Sept. 3.
He has a background in internal and emergency medicine as well as family practice.
Aguilo is originally from Puerto Rico. He completed his premedical studies at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and his M.D. at University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.
He has most recently been practicing in the Kansas City area and before that the St. Louis and Sikeston areas.
Aguilo is a licensed physician in Missouri, Connecticut and Puerto Rico.
He is married with two children.
Westlake Medical Center is an independent not-for-profit clinic overseen by a local board of directors.
With 80-90 percent of its patients on Medicare, low reimbursement rates have caused financial hardship for the clinic in recent months. The clinic has struggled to maintain enough physicians to spread out expenses and boost revenues. The facility is designed for four practitioners, but has not had that number for several years.
There are eight employees currently working at the clinic in addition to the two physicians.
