*Editor’s Note: This opinion is in response to an article titled “Sheriff’s Dept. bailed out” published in the Wednesday, Aug. 21 edition of the Lake Sun.
I was very disappointed with your headline and lead article in the Wednesday, Aug. 21 edition of the Lake Sun. I am sure you have done enough research to know that the commission has reduced the sheriff department budget the past two years. In addition, the funds transferred were from the prison reimbursement which should go to the sheriff's department anyway. So the county commission is only providing funds that should have gone to the sheriff's department anyway.
If you have a complaint about Sheriff Franklin, you should address that directly rather than increasing the problems between the commissioners and the sheriff. I have to agree with you that Sheriff Franklin has let us down in many ways, but those items should be addressed directly rather than in generalities. The sheriff is an elected official so we should hold him accountable for his job performance. When he ran against Sheriff Page, I voted for him because I though he would provide new ideas and enthusiasm. I told John Page that I had made a mistake. Sheriff Franklin needs to address things like retention and poor pay for deputies. It is also his job to work with the commissioners to get the funds he needs to do a quality job.
It's also the commissioners job to provide those funds, not make the sheriff beg for them. I am sure it is irritating to get calls from the newspaper but that is the sheriff's job too. We have a right to hear what he is doing and what his plans are.
It's time for our county leaders to show some leadership and be accountable for their actions. This include the Lake Sun, the county commission and the sheriff.
