  • Everyone should have a friend like Peter.
I was not having a good day. I went out for a walk, and the more I thought about my problems, the worse I felt. I came home and did what a lot of people do these days. I opened up Facebook. That's when I saw Peter's post.
He wrote, "A man who rode in a carpool felt sick whenever they passed under a certain tunnel. His doctor diagnosed this as carpool tunnel syndrome." I laughed in spite of myself. Peter is always posting quips and quotes like this. They come as reminders not to take ourselves too seriously.
The other day he wrote, "If you wear a blindfold at the shooting range, you won't know what you're missing."
The posts are so silly you just have to laugh. Peter has that uncanny ability to help you forget about your troubles and look at the bright side of life. We all need a friend like him.
Of course, the scriptures tell us that we have another friend who is faithful and true.
He reminds us that no matter how bad things get, God still loves us. The old hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" speaks to that truth. The second stanza reads, "Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble everywhere? We should never be discouraged. Take it to the Lord in prayer."
I find that all I need to do is begin talking to Jesus when I have a problem. Before long, I begin to see things from a new perspective.
As I am reminded of the promises of Scripture, I realize that no matter how bad things get, God will never let me go.
Reading the Bible is even better than going to Facebook.
When you open up the Scriptures, you meet a God who wants to get up close and personal.
He comes looking for people like you and me. He brings healing, hope and new life. He turns people's lives around and promises them a joy that is amazing. That's good news.
I laughed when Peter wrote, "I wanted to lose weight so I went to the paint store. I heard I could get thinner there."
I could identify with that joke.
But when Jesus says, "Come to me all who are weary and carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest," my heart is made glad. I thank God for friends like Peter, but I praise him for a friend like Jesus.
God bless. See you in church.
