President Andrew Johnson suspends Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton
On August 12, 1867, President Andrew Johnson issued an Executive Order which suspended Edwin M. Stanton as Secretary of War. Stanton was ordered to transfer "all records, books, and other property now in your custody and charge" to General Ulysses S. Grant.
