  • Lois Verneille Craig Smith peacefully passed away at the home of her daughter in Fort Worth, TX, on 31 July 2013, two days after celebrating her 94th birthday. She was born on 28 July 1919 in Argenta, IL to Lena Querry Craig and Harry Craig.
Lois was the only girl among 7 brothers and spent her childhood in Argenta, working in her Dad's Grocery Store, delivering newspapers and being active in the band and cheerleading at Argenta High School.
Lois worked at the Draft Board for Macon County in Decatur during WW II. She married her best friend and loving companion of 58 years, William R. Smith in 1951 and began to travel the USA and the world, living in Texas, Germany, Missouri, and Maryland until retiring from the US Air Force in 1968.
They settled in Climax Springs, Missouri, to enjoy another 35 years on the Lake of the Ozarks. They built their own home from the ground up to enjoy the Ozark sunrises and the Lake, becoming avid crappie fishermen. Lois was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 3600, Climax Springs; the Ladies Golf Association, Lake Valley Golf Course, Camdenton; and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Climax Springs. She worked at Blair Cedar in Camdenton for a few years before retiring to be Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.
She and Bill became Winter Texans, traveling to Mission, TX, every winter for over a decade to become members of the Green Gate Gang, living in an RV and making lifelong friends from around the country. Lois was truly an optimist, every single day of her life, always going with the flow, always with a radiant smile and sparkling blue eyes! She found pleasure and joy in everything she did and shared that joy with those around her. Baseball was in her blood and she was a committed, avid fan of the Texas Rangers to the last day of her life! On The Road Again should have been her theme song. She would go anywhere, anytime and her travel bag seemed to always be packed. Lois lived to laugh and to enjoy life to the fullest. Her joy of life and her bubbling, infectious laughter is her legacy to her devoted family.
Lois Craig Smith is survived by three children, Cynthia A Garlock of Fort Worth, TX, Melvin M Smith of Mission, KS and Byran G Smith of Lees Summit, MO; seven grandchildren, Angela Lowe and Tamara Alexander of Fort Worth, TX; Logan and Mackenzie Smith of Mission, KS; Brandy Hereth, Corey Smith, and Kiara Smith of Lees Summitt, MO; and 6 great grandchildren, Hailey and Kasey Lowe, Taylor and Tyler Alexander of Fort Worth, TX; Justice and Titus Hereth of Lees Summit, MO; and two brothers, Hal Craig of Belleville, IL and Robert (Ranger Bob) Craig of Decatur, IL.
Page 2 of 2 - She is preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, Harold Craig, Don Craig, Clayton Craig, Max Craig, and Gilbert Craig and by her loving husband William R Smith.
Following a graveside service, Lois will be interned with her husband at the Springfield National Cemetery, Springfield, MO, on 23 August 2013, at 1000.
