The 21st annual Laurie Hillbilly BBQ Cookoff will be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2 and 3 at the Laurie Fairgrounds. The theme is “Pork in the Park.”

The 21st annual Laurie Hillbilly BBQ Cookoff will be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2 and 3 at the Laurie Fairgrounds. The theme is “Pork in the Park.”

Last year there were 55 teams competing from seven states with 14 kids in the Kids-Q.

The contest is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. The Kid's Q contest is open to two age groups: 5-10 and 11-15.

Cash prizes total $7,225.

An apron with 100 $1 dollar bills on it that will be raffled off. Tickets will be sold at the event for $1 each.

On Friday, the beer garden will be open 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Buck A Duck races will start at 1 p.m. and be held every hour. In the beer garden from 6-8 while they last, there will be free chicken wing samples donated by G2M and prepared by contestants. Sponsored by the Bank of Versailles - Laurie and Central Bank-Laurie, Big John & the 39th Street Blues Band will play for the dance from 7-11.

On Saturday, the Hillbilly Smoke Shack will be open to the public serving biscuits and gravy starting at 7 a.m. The beer garden will also be open Saturday. The BBQ competition starts at 10 a.m. with the awards ceremony around 4 p.m.
