I have read the articles in the various papers about the discussions concerning the highway issues at the west end of Osage Beach.
My first question is why anyone from the city council hasn’t appeared before the Missouri Highway Commission demanding that they fix their mistake.
They studied, designed and built the intersection and it is their problem to fix. The city should not accept anything less than the state rebuilding the intersection correctly.
It is obvious a full intersection is needed in this location.
The state’s own studies came to that conclusion and the amount of traffic in this area has grown substantially since those studies were completed so the need is even greater now.
Now for the discussion about building an extension to the old highway 54 all the way to State Road Y to act as a service road to the new expressway.
Nice idea for the state or county to do this, it does have its positive attributes and it will be located in the state and in the county BUT is not located in the City of Osage Beach.
And more importantly it doesn’t solve the problem of having to drive over two miles to get onto the expressway from the west end of Osage Beach. Current business health and future development in this area will be severely hindered until this intersection is fixed.
The city is busy trying to find a legal way to borrow money to build this new road extension without going to the voters for approval.
They can’t legally spend money building a road located outside of the city so they are also trying to get all of the property owners along this proposed road to voluntarily annex into the city so they don’t have to go to a vote of the people for an annexation.
Why pray tell is the elected city council not willing to ask the voters to approve spending one and a half million dollars to build a road outside the current city limits?
Could it be city residents are looking out at the street in front of their home that has no sidewalks and needs repairs?
Could it be city residents are concerned about the monumental liability the city took on by accepting ownership of the old highway with its poor sidewalks and intersections?
Maybe the city council is trying to avoid going to the voters because they know the residents of the city would never accept this plan.
The answer is quite simple, you were elected to represent us, so do what it takes to get in front of the Missouri Highway Commission and represent us and our needs. Demand that the state finds a way to fix their mistake and build a proper intersection.

Spend that money inside the city by improving our sidewalks and streets.
