VFW Post 5923 in Camdenton is looking to better connect with the community with a new schedule of public events. The first event takes place this Sunday with a barbeque and outdoor games event that welcomes guests, families and members to the Post.
The Post's new leadership and members have made strengthening their community image and involvement a top priority.
"For a long stretch, the post has not done enough to welcome the community and promote the programs of the VFW. We do a lot for our fellow veterans and the community," said member Keith Lucas. "We want to be known as more than a BINGO hall. We help with VA claims, support military charities, and give financially to local community organizations."
The post recently elected new officers to include a new commander.
"A lot of changes are taking place because of our new commander, a Vietnam veteran, Lance Kellogg and his leadership team," said Lucas. "We have a diverse team composed of veterans from the Korean War to Iraq and Afghanistan. We are seeing a lot of inactive members coming back, that had stopped participating for various reasons."
The First Annual Family & Friends Barbeque will take place on Sunday, July 28 at the Post on South Business Route 5 in Camdenton. The public and kids are welcome. Hamburgers, brats, hot dogs and more will be available with beer and soda available for purchase.
Outdoor activities and games along with the barbeque will be available from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. in the front parking lot of the Post. There will be ladder ball, ladder pong, washers and corn hole.
The Post also has a car show scheduled for Aug. 24 in the parking lot of Orschelns in Camdenton. For more information, contact the post's Activities Chairman Keith Lucas at 573-693-5755 or check out their website, lakevfw.org.
