Charges are pending against six suspects taken into custody after a failed attempt to return what was believed to be stolen merchandise ended in a high speed chase from Camdenton to Buffalo with several agencies in pursuit.
The chase spanned multiple counties and more than 30 miles.
At one point in the pursuit, the suspect driving the stolen getaway car attempted to swerve into a Missouri Highway Patrol officer's car while others were throwing what were believed to be stolen items out of the car.
The chase began on Monday evening at the Walmart Supercenter in Camdenton after an employee reported a person had tried to return something that had not been purchased. When officers from the Camdenton Police Department arrived, the Walmart employee had detained an 18-year-old white male from Springfield. The employee directed officers to several other suspects in a silver GMC Envoy sitting on the parking lot. The suspects in the car were believed to have taken part in the scheme to return the stolen item.
When officers ran the plate on the Envoy, it came back as stolen. It turned out the Envoy had been stolen from Polk County and the plates lifted off a vehicle in Bolivar.
Camdenton officers were able to locate the stolen vehicle on the parking lot of Murphy USA. When the suspects in the Envoy saw the patrol car, they fled the scene driving west on Highway 54 at high speeds, attempting to swerve into the patrol vehicle and throwing items out of the car as the pursuit continued onto J Road then Highway 7 towards Climax Springs. It is unclear what route the vehicle then took before heading south into Dallas County.
Camden County Sheriff's Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol picked up the pursuit that continued south to Buffalo, Mo. where the suspects were taken into custody.
During the incident, officers received information of a black male at the Walmart near the front of the store with a firearm. Officers were at the store at the time and immediately responded but saw no person matching that description in the area reported or other areas of the store. A check of store video turned up no evidence to substantiate the report.
