  • Retired teachers meet for annual meeting

  • The annual meeting of Region 7 of the Missouri Retired Teachers and Public School Personnel Association was recently held at the United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall in California, Mo.

  • The annual meeting of Region 7 of the Missouri Retired Teachers and Public School Personnel Association was recently held at the United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall in California, Mo. Upon arrival, attendees were greeted with the music of Phil Lewis at the piano and were treated to a tasty continental breakfast. Assisted by the members of the Moniteau Unit, the attendees were served a delicious catered meal at noon.
    Georgia White, Region 7 Vice-President, of Richland, called the meeting to order and presided over the day’s activities. Norris Gerhart, Mayor of California, welcomed everyone to his city and praised teachers for the work that they do in the lives of children. Welcoming the group on behalf of his unit, Moniteau County, David Jungmeyer invited the attendees to make a day of it and visit some of the city’s historic and well-known sites. The pastor of the church, Dr. Andrew Lovins, delivered the opening prayer.
    Region 7 consists of the following counties: Camden, Cole, Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan, Osage, Phelps, and Pulaski. It represents the retirees from the school districts within those areas from Jefferson City through Hermann.
    Guests and speakers included the following: MRTA President, Mark Hargens; Immediate Past President, Veronica Hambacker; MRTA Treasurer, Ron Marsch; Director of Legislation and Policy for the Public School Retirement Systems of Missouri, Maria Walden; Missouri Retired Teachers’ Foundation President, Walt Cochran; Chair of the State Membership Committee, Don Pittrich; 2012 Region 7 Distinguished Retiree and State Retirement Education Chair, Larry Beal; MRTA Director, Jim Kreider; and Forrest T. Jones Representative, Tom Wales.
    The group also heard reports from regional committees concerning membership, legislation, community service, informative and protective services, and retirement education. In addition, each local unit president gave a report on their unit’s activities, service projects, and significant speakers for the year.
    Region 7 of MRTA proudly announces that 72 members attended to represent the local units of the region. Together those members attending collected $1,000 in donations for the Missouri Retired Teachers ‘Foundation for classroom grants to be awarded to teachers currently in the field.
    Following the meeting, guests were able to visit local landmarks. The 2014 meeting for Region 7 of MRTA was set for April 25, 2014, with the Morgan County Unit as hosts. All those from Region 7 who attended the meeting would like to thank Moniteau County Unit for being such delightful hosts.
