Congratulations to all of the athletes who participated in last night’s Twilight 5K Run and 1 mile Fun Run put on by the Thompson Campus Center. This event has been going on for as long as I can remember and is always a well run event both figuratively and literally. Check out today’s Kirksville Daily Express for a list of winners in the various categories.
The St. Louis Cardinals return to action tonight after a four day break as they begin a three game series against the San Diego Padres tonight at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals bring a 1 game lead in the NL Central and the best record in the National League into tonight’s game against the Padres who are sliding further and further into last place in the NL West.
Chris Carpenter will make his second rehab start in his latest comeback attempt tomorrow for the Cardinals Triple A team the Memphis Redbirds. Carpenter pitched relatively well in his first rehab start on Monday for Springfield but obviously still has a lot of work to do and needs to get better command of his pitches and build up his stamina before he can even consider joining the big league club.
The Kansas City Royals also return to the field tonight as they face the Al Central leading Detroit Tigers tonight in KC. If the Royals are going to contend for the Al Central title then they have to make their move now in my opinion and can make up considerable ground if they can take this weekend series from the Tigers.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is off this weekend as they get ready for their annual race in Indianapolis next weekend. The Nationwide Series is in Joliet, IL for a race on Sunday which some of the Sprint Cup drivers may participate in.
The third of the four major golf tournaments is currently underway as the British Open’s second round of play will have been completed by the time this blog is posted. At last check Zach Johnson was leading but several players including Tiger Woods were within striking distance. The British Open is an interesting tournament in that you have to get up at 3 a.m. if you are going to watch it and I’ve never wanted to watch it bad enough to do that.
We’ll be back on Monday with a look back at all this weekend’s sports action and a look ahead to what’s on tap for next week. Thanks as always for checking out this blog and I hope that you will take the time to do the same for all the other excellent blogs on this site.
Have a terrific weekend!
