The Eldon School District has been awarded an AmeriCorps State & National grant for $207,304 to continue its successful PAVE AmeriCorps tutoring program for the 2013-2014 school year. PAVE AmeriCorps Members provide academic interventions to at-risk students in 4th-12th grade and support Pre-school students to improve school readiness for Kindergarten. The program serves more than 500 district students each year and consistently meets or exceeds all program goals.
“PAVE AmeriCorps Members play a critical role in the support our District provides to students who struggle in school," Eldon superintendent Matt Davis said. "We are excited to receive funding from the Missouri Community Service Commission to continue this important program. ”
Across the country, AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 men and women in intensive service each year at more than 15,000 locations including nonprofits, schools, public agencies and community and faith-based groups across the country. AmeriCorps Members help communities tackle pressing problems while mobilizing millions of volunteers for the organizations they serve. Members gain valuable professional, educational, and life benefits, and the experience has a lasting impact on the Members and the communities they serve.
PAVE AmeriCorps Members must make an eleven-month commitment to the program. In return for their service, members receive a monthly living allowance of approximately $1,100. Additionally, health care coverage is available for those who do not have coverage. Upon successful completion of their term of service, AmeriCorps Members receive a $5,550 education award which can be used to attend college or repay qualified student loans. Members receive comprehensive training and will support numerous community service projects during the year.
‘We knew this was going to be a tough year for funding. In fact, three programs were cut in the state of Missouri this year. Due to our performance and to the overwhelming support we have in our community, we are very glad to report that our grant application was fully funded. Recruitment has already begun to fill seventeen full-time tutor positions. Orientation starts on August 5, 2013,” said Daphney Partridge, PAVE AmeriCorps Program Director.
