  • Suspects in Mennonite business burglaries taken into custody

  • Charges are expected in Morgan County against four suspects in several area burglaries.

    From June 16-24, the Morgan County Sheriff's Office took several reports of burglaries in the northern portion of Morgan County. The burglaries took place in the overnight hours, and specifically targeted Mennonite-owned businesses.
    Acting on information obtained during the investigation of the burglaries, Morgan County detectives searched a residence at 503 N. Oak St. in Stover on June 26 where several items reported as stolen were recovered including two firearms. Further investigation at the scene revealed other items that were believed to be stolen from other jurisdictions.
    After contacting law enforcement in multiple other counties in reference to the property recovered from the residence, detectives now believe that the subjects are responsible for at least 25 burglaries in several counties including Morgan.
    According to other counties contacted, all the burglaries in their areas also occurred at Mennonite-owned businesses.
    To date four subjects have been booked into the Morgan County Sheriff's Office with charges expected.
    The investigation is continuing with further arrests expected.
    In the last two weeks, the Morgan County Sheriff's blotter reflects 13 reports of burglary and seven cases of theft without breaking and entering.
    The blotter report showed a burglary at Zimmerman Tractor on Highway 5 in Versailles on June 19, another burglary in Versailles June 21 and one on June 23 on Hwy. K, Versailles.
    Three reports of breaking and entering were made on June 24 in the Highway C and Kelsay Rd. areas of Barnett, north of Versailles. These burglaries were reported at Cedar Valley Chimes, Dutch Country Store and Countryside Plants. Another burglary was reported June 24 on Gracey Creek Rd., Versailles.
    A burglary was reported June 25 on Angel Rd. in Fortuna.
    On June 26, four more burglaries were reported on Proctor Rd., Stover, and on Highway C, Gracey Creek Rd. and Highway TT, Versailles. The 10th report of breaking and entering came on June 27 from a resident on Oak St. in Stover.
    A theft report was made June 17 on Smith Creek Rd., Versailles, and on Fox Hills Rd., Stover, on June 20.
    On June 24, MFA Oil on Highway 52, Barnett, reported a theft. Two larceny cases came out of the Stover area on June 24 as well. These cases occurred on Peach Tree Rd. and Clearwater Rd.
    Theft was reported on Highway TT in Versailles on June 25, and on June 26, a theft was reported on Whispering Timbers in the Stover area.
