After being swept by the Texas Rangers over the weekend the St. Louis Cardinals responded by going to Houston and taking out their frustrations on the Astros. The Cardinals put 13 runs on the board last night on their way to a 13 to 5 thrashing of the hapless Astros. The Astros appear to be even worse than they were when they were in the National League as they have a roster that more closely resembles a Triple A minor league team than a team who belongs in the major leagues. I’m not quite sure how they fell as far as they did but it will take years for them to be competitive again in my opinion. The Cards and Astros wrap up their quick two game series tonight before the Cardinals move on to Oakland after a day off tomorrow.
The Kansas City Royals lost a tough one to the Atlanta Braves 4 to 2 last night. The Royals had a chance to win the game in the 9th but their offense went back to the default setting for the year and they weren’t able to capitalize on the opportunity the Braves gave them. That series continues tonight as well.
Voting for the MLB All Star game continues as the Cardinals Yadier Molina is the leading vote getter for catcher while Carlos Beltran leads voting for outfielders. If Molina doesn’t maintain his lead and get the honor of being the starting catcher then I have to question the sanity of the fans. Yes, Buster Posey was last year’s most valuable player but that was last year. This year Yadi has clearly shown he is not only bhe best defensive catcher in the league but also one of the league’s top hitters and deserves to be the NL’s starting catcher. Beltran will most likely be a starting outfielder even if he doesn’t hang on to his lead as the top three vote getters make up the starting outfield.
I would suspect that the Royals will be represented on the AL squad by a pitcher. I wouldn’t think they would have a position player who would be named as a backup by AL manager Jim Leyland and they certainly don’t have anyone who has a chance of getting the most votes at any of the infield or outfield positions.
The Chicago Blackhawks won the 2013 Stanley Cup on Monday with a come from behind victory over the Boston Bruins. The Bruins were leading in the third period 2 to 1 and if they could have hung on they would have forced a Game 7 but the Blackhawks were able to score two goals in that third period for a 3 to 2 victory.
The UCLA Bruins won the College World Series last night with a dominating victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Monday’s game was a lot closer as the Bruins withstood two excellent scoring chances by Mississippi State. The Bulldogs did not execute very well in the CWS finals but in fairness to them UCLA has an incredible pitching staff.
The Wimbledon tennis tournament continues at the All England Club in London with Serena Williams easily winning her first round match on her way to an eventual meeting with her bestie Maria Sharapova. The only major upset involving a player I have actually heard of was Rafael Nadal’s first round exit on Monday.
We’ll be back on Friday with a look ahead to this weekend’s sports action as well as whatever else comes our way. By then we will know if Phil Pressey is drafted in the NBA draft and which team does the honors. Thanks as always for checking out this blog and please do so for all the other blogs on this site.
Have a wonderful Wednesday!
