When a small town of about 700 people are hit with a tragedy, the townspeople have questions. The residents of Iberia were shocked when one of their own was found dead on Sunday morning.
The day before, neighbors, friends and family went door to door searching for 13-year-old Macala Shelton who found missing by her grandmother. Shelton was last seen going to bed around 11:45 on Friday night. Shelton's body was found about six miles from her home Sunday morning.
Residents from the small Missouri town said that things like this simply do not happen there.
The Ministry Alliance is hosting a service on 7 p.m. on Friday, June 28 in Macala's memory. The service will be held at First Baptist Church in Iberia. Church staff said the service will last about 30 minutes and will include scripture and hymns.
Staff also told the Lake Sun that the service is a way to help the community find healing from God.
The church prefers that media not come to the event in order to respect the community during their time of grief.
Miller County Sheriff Bill Abbott confirmed that an autopsy has been completed in this case but he said that he has yet to receive the autopsy report. Abbott also told the Lake Sun that additional tests are being completed by the Missouri Highway Patrol Crime Lab to find out if the victim had been sexual assaulted before the murder.
Funeral plans have yet to be released at this time.
