Traditionally in schools, you will hear many long-time administrators comment about how it is the little things that make your day. It is the funny little comments like "are you the boss of the school" or "can you tie my shoe" and the enthusiasm that students, especially the little people go about their daily activities. One of the best assets that the Morgan County R-II School District has to offer parents is the quality of our preschool program.
Our district has committed to utilizing our federal Title I dollars to providing a 5-day per week preschool experience for students at South Elementary in Gravois Mills.
At the Versailles campus, we offer a variety of 2-day, 3-day, and 5-day per week sections also funded through our Title I monies. Our preschool teachers have worked closely with our Parents as Teachers Educators to ensure those who want access to preschool have that opportunity.
At South Elementary, some staffing changes have caused a preschool teacher position to open late in the summer in our preschool program. Our administrators and school board members have met to discuss the concern with finding a quality applicant at this late date to fill the position. In addition, there has been concern that only five students have enrolled at South Elementary for the preschool program for the 2013-2014 school year.
As you can imagine, it is very hard to provide a good educational experience for students when if only two students are absent you are missing half the class.
At this time, the district is planning to offer those families enrolled for the South Elementary Preschool to attend at the Versailles campus, which also has not reached capacity. It is our intent to replace the position in South Elementary the following school year giving the district time to find a good, qualified applicant and to search out families desiring to attend preschool.
If you are a parent of a child who will be 4 before Aug. 1 and would like your child to be screened and to attend preschool, please call Elementary Principal Joni Spalding at 573-378-4272.
