Adam Wainright became the first ten game winner in baseball yesterday as he pitched another gem of a game for the St. Louis Cardinals as they beat the New York Mets 2 to 1 winning another series and taking 2 out of 3 from the Mets. Wainright continues to prove he is one of the best and most consistent pitchers in baseball and I would have to think he would be in consideration to start the all star game in a few weeks. The Cardinals are in Miami tonight to begin a three game series with the cellar dwelling Marlins.
The Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers wrapped up their three game series on Wednesday with every game having the same score, 3 to 2. The Royals took two out of three from the Tigers and then went to Tampa Bay last night and exploded all over the Rays in a 10 to 1 victory. It is quite possible that is the most runs the Royals have scored in one game all year, it’s certainly close to that as their offense has struggled throughout most of the year. The Royals and Rays continue their series tonight in Tampa.
If the NBA finals continue as they have for the past four games then they will go all seven games with the Spurs winning game 7. The San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat have traded games through the first 4 with the series being even at 2 games apiece going into Game 5 on Sunday. I have found this series to be much more enjoyable than I originally thought as both teams have had their share of moments and the Spurs have been able to play havoc with the aura the Heat seem to have with most people including themselves. Win or lose, the Spurs have definitely shown a lot in the first four games.
In what has to be the longest hockey game I have ever seen the NHL Stanley Cup finals began on Wednesday night with the Chicago Blackhawks defeating the Boston Bruins 4 to 3 in triple overtime. Game 2 is tomorrow night and there probably isn’t any way it can live up to Game 1 but I will be happy to see them try.
The US Open golf tournament is underway outside Philadelphia and Tiger Woods wants a do over. Woods had a terrible first round and may have injured his wrist as well. The tournament has been plagued by horrible weather conditions and things aren’t looking much better for the weekend. Hopefully they will be able to get the wole tournament in but not everyone was able to complete their opening round yesterday so they will need to play catch up today.
We’ll be back on Monday with a review of all this weekend’s sports action and a look ahead to next week. I want to take a second and wish all the dads out there a very happy Father’s day on Sunday.
Have a great weekend!
