June has arrived, and summer has officially begun. The easiest way to tell is by going out to the golf courses and seeing the greens filled with dozens of golfers.
This past Thursday and Friday saw a number of golfers from across the state and neighboring states converge on Camdenton, as Lake Valley Golf and Country Club hosted the 54th Missouri Women's Golf Association Junior Championship.
The event featured 47 golfers from ages 14 to 17. Among that number were two lake area golfers: Taylor Hayes of Lake Ozark and Amber Wilson of Linn Creek.
The 36 hole, par 71, 5603 yard tournament was concluded on Friday, June 7, with Jean Tyrell of Leawood, Kan. winning the 2013 Junior title.
Going in to the final round, Tyrell had a two shot lead over Madison Frerking of Blue Springs, Mo. and was three shots ahead of the defending champ Jordan Chael of Overland Park, Kan.
Tyrell finished the tourney with a score of 152, Chael clinched second with a 153, and Brooke Cusumano rounded out third with a 156.
Local golfers Taylor Hayes and Amber Wilson finished with a final score of 170 and 186 respectively.
The four top finishers were invited to play on the Missouri Junior Girls Four State Team. The 2013 team will be comprised of:
Jean Tyrrell, Leawood, KS
Jordan Chael, Overland Park, KS
Brooke Cusumano, St. Louis, MO
Amanda Kim, O'Fallon, MO
Baile Winslow, Overland Park, KS
Alternates: Sun Young Jung, Springfield, MO and Taylor Black, Warrensburg, MO
Missouri will play teams from Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska at Manhattan Country Club in Manhattan, Kan. on June 24-25. Missouri has won eleven titles since inception of this event. Iowa is the defending Four State Junior Girls champion.
