Camdenton R-III Afterschool Services and FIRST® are pleased to announce that the Camdenton 4-H FIRST® LASER team was selected to be the host for the annual Mid MO FIRST® LEGO® qualifier November 16, 2013.

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO®-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.
Elementary and middle-school students get to design, build, test and program robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology, apply real-world math and science concepts, research challenges facing today’s scientists, learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills,  and participate in tournaments and celebrations.  What FLL teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing. It’s fun. It’s exciting. And the skills they learn will last a lifetime.
The tournament will also help boost the local economy as it will bring in over 200 people to the community for the weekend to stay in local hotels, eat in restaurants and shop.  The LASER robotics teams are currently working with the Camdenton Chamber to arrange special packages in regards to lodging and meals for participating teams.  The event is expected to grow to a 40 team tournament within the next two years.
The LASER teams hope that by hosting the annual qualifier tournament more local area schools and organizations will register to become official FIRST® teams.  Previously teams had to travel to Kansas City or St. Louis to participate in an official FIRST® sanctioned event. The Camdenton 4-H LASER teams are willing to mentor any school or team in the area that would like to join in the “Hardest Fun Ever!”
Numerous community volunteers will be needed to host the 20 team tournament for judging, event set up, concessions and registration.  Contact the Afterschool Services office at 573-346-9233 if you are interested in volunteering or helping to sponsor this event.  More information about FIRST® and the LASER teams can be found at www.laser3284.org or www.usfirst.org
