  • School is coming to an end and summer is right around the corner. Nothing says summer like community pools opening for business. Lake area community pools officially open this weekend. Children and families will have the opportunity to splash, jump, slide and cannonball into the water for the first time this year.
One local pool is opening after recently 'going green.' When it was time to buy a new boiler, Keith Walk, Eldon's Parks and Recreation Director wanted to look for a new way to keep the pool water warm.
"I wanted to get away from gas. It's just not safe," Walk said.
Walk had heard of solar power and thought that would be a good replacement for the gas boiler. Walk presented his idea to the board of aldermen and was approved,
Walk said that solar heat is expensive up front but thinks it will end up saving the city money in the long run.
According to Walk, the solar panel system cost the city of Eldon approximately $39,000 from Missouri Solar Applications, but he said the city will save on the continual cost of gas.
"Gas is just so expensive," he said.
Walk is impressed with how easy and maintenance free the solar system seems to be so far.
"It just seems so easy and simple," Walk said. "I think it's a great deal. The sun is doing it all."
The Eldon City pool opens on Saturday, May 25 at noon. Camdenton opens Saturday at 11 a.m. along with Versailles city pool.
