  • It's official. An analysis of map being used for the Camden County Planning and Zoning District and the map on file with the county clerk are different.
    However, the legal description defining the boundaries for the original ballot language matches the map currently being used by planning and zoning but not the map used in the election.
    The map issue came up unexpectedly last week during a Camden County Commission meeting when the planning and zoning director brought the issue to the attention of the associate commissioners.
    Presiding Commissioner Kris Franken was on vacaiton and not present for the meeting.
    After analyzing the two maps and comparing them with the legal description used in the ballot language, it is clear that at some point and for some reason the map was changed. It now appears that some property owners who are included in the current map did not vote in the 1997 election.
    since voters approved the district in 1997 and 2004 when the Camden County Unified Land Use Plan was implemented, there was a change in the boundary lines.
    Late last week, in response to questions raised about the maps, Camden County Recorder Donnie Snelling, Assessor Eddie Whitworth and Clerk Rowland Todd got involved comparing maps and legal descriptions.
    Todd said he has compared the names of those who voted in 1997 with the names of property owners in the areas in question. He said it looks likes those property owners did not vote in the 1997 election.
    Camden County Planning and Zoning director Don Hathaway said last week if voters indeed did not vote, that does not mean they weren't given the opportunity to vote.
    He is no deferring all election questions to Todd.
    Hathaway plans to continue to look into the situation.
    Hathawy said the county continues to review GIS maps to insure proper zoning district designation has been assigned.
    "It is important to understand that these reviews and upgrades to our GIS systems take substantial time and effort from many departments," Hathaway said.
    The county is still in the process of reviewing and finalizing data, he said.
