  • Alex Campbell, 8, from Osage Beach Cub Scout Pack #232 recently won first overall in the District Pinewood Derby Competition. The competition included scouts from Osage Beach, Camdenton, Lake Ozark, and other regional scout packs.
Each cub scout was given the basic materials to build their own car from scratch, including a block of wood, wheels and axels. Each scout was to work on their cars independently, in preparation for the annual competition. The Osage Beach Pack, Pack 232, had their intra-Pack competition in March, in order to determine the fastest cars from the local Pack and those Pack members which were to be eligible to compete at the District race representing Pack 232 and Osage Beach.
The District race consisted of four initial flights or races within each pack achievement designation (that of the scouts designated as: Bobcat, Wolf, Bear or Webelos). In turn, the fastest cars from each category of scout made it to the finals at districts. In the end, the car crafted by Alex Campbell finished in first place in 9 of his last 10 flights; giving Alex the first overall trophy as well as the first place trophy for his scouting designation.
The competition was held at The Church at Osage Hills, in Osage Beach, Missouri.
Alex parents own a local go kart track, Gran Rally Go Karts, and his grandfather, Jim Herrick of Camdenton is a retired GM Certified auto mechanic; although Alex claims that these ‘speed’ genes had nothing to do with how well his pine wood derby car performed in the local and district races.
