  • Tuscumbia knocks off Macks Creek with 17-12 win

  • STOUTLAND - Top-seeded Macks Creek was upset by fourth-seed Tuscumbia on Monday in Class 1 District 9 baseball semifinal action by the score of 17-12.
    Tuscumbia plated one run in the top of the first for an early 1-0 lead. The Pirates responded with three of their own in the bottom half. Brian Devivo singled and stole second ahead of a Tommie Willis single. Brian would later steal third and advance home when the throw eluded the third baseman and tie the game at one apiece. Austin Hufferd and Bricker Berry would then be hit by pitches. Following two strikeouts, Jacob Devivo pushed Willis and Hufferd across to create a 3-1 lead.
    The Lions retook the lead in the second. They utilized two hits, three errors and three walks to plate four runs.
    Trailing by two, Macks Creek matched with four of their in the bottom of the second. Chase Schmidt lead off with a walk and moved to second when Brian Devivo was hit by a pitch. After a line out to center, Hufferd collected a single to left, loading the bases. Following a strikeout, Cody Eidson hit a ball to second, where the fielder tried to make a throw to second, but was overthrown, and allowed Schmidt to score. Brian would cross n a wild pitch to tie the game, right before an Eric Waters triple to left-center that plated Hufferd and Eidson for a 7-5 lead.
    Tuscumbia would continue to plate runs over the next three innings. They plates four in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth for a total of 17, while the Pirates plates two in fourth, two n the fifth and one in the seventh for their final score of 12.
    "We left 11 runners on base tonight and committed eight errors on defense. Add those to the 15 walks and that is a recipe for disaster," Coach Jason Trusty said.
    Brian Devivo took the loss on the mound. He worked the first three-and-two-thirds of an inning, allowing 11 runs, five earned, on five hits while striking out five, walking nine and hitting one batter. He falls to 2-5. Matt Hicks relieved in the fourth and worked a little over an inning. He allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits while walking three and hitting one batter. Tommie Willis finished the final two-and-one-third of an inning, allowing no hits or runs while walking three and striking out five.
    Brian Devivo led the Pirates offensively with a four-for-four night at the plate, which included four singles, three runs scored and one time being beaned. Tommie Willis and Jacob Devivo each collected two hits, while Austin Hufferd, Cody Eidson, Eric Waters and Matt Hicks all had one hit each. Willis and Waters scored once and Eidson and Chase Schmidt each scored twice, Hufferd also crossed the plate three times. Bricker Berry reached base on a hit-by-pitch.
