  • Immediately after spelling “defectoscope” and “crumpet” and winning the 2013 Camdenton Middle School Spelling Bee on Friday, speller number 13, Kenneth Khor, exclaimed, “I thought number thirteen was an unlucky number!”
The path to the schoolwide spelling bee began with students taking a written spelling test in their language arts classes. The top ten spellers on each of the seventh and eighth grade teams advanced to a team spelling bee. The top four spellers in each team bee were then invited to the CMS Spelling Bee in the Little Theater during homeroom.
Twenty-two students spelled in the all-school bee. After seven rounds, only four spellers remained. Abby Brauer went out on “reactant.” Last year’s winner, Alex Mades was eliminated by the word “whelk.” Brauer and Mades tied for third place. The last two spellers battled for eleven additional rounds. When Korianna Wimberley misspelled “defectoscope”, Khor correctly spelled the word and followed up with “crumpet” to become the 2013 champion.
