With Americans experiencing the shortest tax season on record, the Free File Alliance, a nonprofit coalition of industry-leading tax software companies partnered with the IRS, is reminding taxpayers that free, brand-name tax software is available at www.IRS.gov/FreeFile. Through the Free File program, all taxpayers with a 2012 Adjusted Gross Income of $57,000 or less – about 100 million Americans – may choose from more than a dozen leading tax software providers and prepare and e-file their federal tax returns at no cost. Basic federal e-filing services are also available regardless of income level.
"Free File is the easiest solution for taxpayers in a time crunch," said Tim Hugo, executive director of the Free File Alliance. "Since tax season was delayed by the fiscal cliff, millions of people are in a rush to get their taxes done. Fortunately, Free File is there to do the heavy lifting. Everyone making $57,000 or less should visit IRS.gov/FreeFile – the only place where you can choose from the best software on the market and do your taxes in minutes."
Hugo continued, "Free File software provides step-by-step help and accurate calculations to make tax-filing quick and simple. You can skip the hassle of having to mail your forms and do your taxes quickly, easily and even at home in your pajamas. Plus, when you e-file, you'll receive a quick confirmation via email, so you can rest assured that you're done for the year."
Since its inception in 2003, Free File has offered free online tax preparation software for 70 percent of taxpayers. To begin, taxpayers should visit www.IRS.gov/freefile. There, users will find a list of Free File Alliance member companies and may either choose one that fits their needs or utilize the "Help Me Find a Company" tool. After selecting a tax software company, users will be transferred to the company's website to prepare, complete and electronically file their federal income tax returns. The service is also available in Spanish.
The Free File Alliance is also partnered with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) and provides e-filing kiosks at 150 VITA locations across the country. VITA provides Americans making $50,000 or less with free tax preparation and in-person assistance at sites that are staffed by IRS-certified volunteers.
