  • Humansville, Mo. - After almost two weeks of lost games due to weather, the Macks Creek Pirates were able to get a game in on the road.  Due to field conditions in Macks Creek, they traveled to Humansville to face the Tigers, and emerged with a 12-5 win on Thursday night.
"We were just looking to get a game in at this point, having already lost four others due to the weather," Coach Jason Trusty said. "We have been on a baseball field a total of four times counting tonight."
Most of the Pirates' practices have been in the school parking lot or the gym as of late.
Humansville started the scoring early.  After the Pirates left two runners on in the top of the first, the Tigers utilized three singles, two errors, and a walk to plate three runs and take a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
Macks Creek responded with three runs of their own in the third.  Brian Devivo singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop before Tommie Willis' single to right was misplayed, plating Devivo and allowing him to reach third.  Following a strikeout and an Austin Hufferd walk, Cody Eidson smacked a ground ball to short, which was again misplayed and allowed Willis to score.  Jacob Devivo then singled to bring in Hufferd and tie the game at three apiece.
The game would progress quietly for the next three innings, as both pitchers settled down and kept the hitters off balance.
In the seventh, the Pirates blew the game open.  They sent 14 hitters to the plate and scored nine runs for a 12-3 lead.  Highlights from the inning include Willis' RBI-double, Hufferd collecting three RBI's on two hits in the frame, and Andrew Kohler's RBI-single.  Each spot in the Pirates lineup during the inning produced a baserunner or a run.
Humansville did not go quietly.  They again utilized a Pirate fielding error, two hits, and a hit batter to plate two runs to create the final score of 12-5.
Brian Devivo picked up his first win of the Spring.  The junior right-hander worked the complete game, allowing five runs, three earned, while striking out 13, hitting a batter, and walking three.
"Brian pitched very well for us tonight," Coach Trusty said. "He spotted his fastball and mixed his offspeed in effectively."
Tommie Willis led the Pirate offensive attack with four hits in five trips to the plate.  He collected three singles, one double, two runs scored, and two RBI's in the contest.  Brian Devivo helped his cause on the mound by going three-for-four at the plate, including three singles, three runs scored, and two RBI's.  Austin Hufferd went two-for-four with a two RBI-single, an RBI-double, and two runs scored, Jacob Devivo had two hits, an RBI, and crossed the plate once, while Andrew Kohler had an RBI-single and a run scored.  Bricker Berry reached base on a walk, Cody Eidson and Matt Hicks each reached base twice and scored a run each, and Chase Schmidt walked and scored a run.
Page 2 of 2 - "Great team effort tonight for us.  We had a few older guys that were out of the lineup tonight, but our younger guys really stepped up and helped us secure our first win of the season," Coach Trusty added.
