Earned numerous military medals
Major Kelly David Messerli, 36, of California, MO passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the University Hospital’s Ellis Fischel Cancer Unit with his loving wife, family and friends by his side.
He was born on January 12, 1977 in Jefferson City, MO, the son of Kelly W. and Carlene (Caldwell) Messerli, both of whom survive of California, MO.
He was married on January 20, 2001 at First Baptist Church in California, MO, to Emily Jo Allen, who survives of the home. Kelly was a 1995 graduate of California High School, graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in 1997, and CMSU in 2000.
Kelly currently was the State Safety Manager for the Missouri National Guard, and also was employed with the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Department. He was deployed to Talil, Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2004-2005, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. His other medals and commendation were: Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal-5 Awards, Overseas Service Ribbon, Aircraft Crew Member Badge, Missouri State Emergency Duty Ribbon-2 Awards, Missouri Long Service Ribbon-15 Years, Missouri Basic Combat Training Ribbon, and Kansas Commendation Ribbon.
He was Commander of the 1438th Engineer Company and was also with the 35th Engineer Brigade and had 19 years of total service. He also worked with the Osage Beach and Jefferson City Police Departments.
He loved sports, coaching his son Spencer’s baseball teams and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the NWTF. He was a Cubmaster, served on the California, MO, City Council, and was Commander of the California VFW.
He is survived by three children, Spencer Allen Messerli, twins Lexy Jo and Kooper David Messerli, of the home; two brothers, Kevin Messerli and wife Cheri, and Rick Messerli and wife Karen, all of California, MO; five sisters, Karen Beth Dameron and Darrell Clutter of California, MO, Kelley Michelle Owsley and husband Joe of Jefferson City, MO, Janet Morris and husband Nick of Stover, MO, Carol Bailey and husband Jerry of Camdenton, MO, and Becky Bax and husband Leon of Jefferson City, MO,; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Kathy Allen, of California, MO; sister-in-law, Penny Harris and husband Alan of Jamestown, MO; and brother-in-law, Jay Allen and Jessica Craig, of California, MO.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church in California. Burial with full military honors will be in the Salem Evangelical Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Greg Morrow. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center of the First Baptist Church in California.
