The Eldon community will gather Friday night to honor and remember a former resident, farmer and pastor that was murdered in Alaska. 54-year-old Thomas Olaf Madole moved to Alaska in 2000 and became a Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) the rural Alaskan village of Manokotak, 350 southwest of Anchorage.
On March 19, Madole responded to the home of 42-year-old Leroy Dick to discuss an alleged assault that took place between Dick and his stepfather.
According to Alaskan court documents, Dick turned a rifle on Madole and shot him as he fled the residence on foot. Additional troopers came to the scene, where they apprehended Dick.
As reported by alaskadisptach.com, Madole was called a hero at a memorial service Sunday. Althought he had only worked in Manokotak for three years, Madole was respected by the community.
Manokotak resident Melissa Paul remembered Madole at the service.
"To our community, he's a family member, a friend, an adopted uncle, grandpa, and to many, a brother in Christ," she said.
Madole moved to Manokotak after spending time in Bethel and Wasilla, Alaska, where he was diagnosed and defeated cancer.
More than 100 people attended Madole’s service in Alaska.
More are expected to welcome Madole’s body in Eldon. Eldon Mayor Ron Bly arranged a police escort from the Kansas City International Airport to Eldon, where Madole’s body arrived Tuesday.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol led the escort followed by the Eldon Police Department.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, March 29, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home. The funeral service is Saturday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at New Life Assembly of God Church in Barnett, Mo., with burial to follow at the Greenmore Memorial Gardens.
According to Phillips’ website, gifts in memory of Tom Madole may be given in care of the family.
A fund has also been set up for the family by the Alaska Concerns of Police Survivors. It's at Wells Fargo Bank. Donations can be made to any branch to the Thomas Madole Memorial Fund and will go directly to his family. The account number is 1018259240.
