  • Recent snowstorms have proven the versatility of a surplus property HumVee the Linn Creek Police Department has been using to assist stranded motorists and lend hand to the other agencies.
The HumVee is for more than just parades.
Early Sunday morning as heavy snow blanketed the lake area, the department was getting the HumVee ready to go.
While the HumVee isn't as quick as a patrol car, it is versatile, allowing the department to get around without getting stuck in heavy snow.
Linn Creek Police Department Chief Trevor Dowdney said the HumVee has been used to deliver bicycles through a program with the Kiwanis and Advantage Metals in 2011- 12 and made a trip to Joplin to deliver bikes. But the winter of 2013 has given the department added appreciation for the vehicle.
Fully operational with lights, radio and sirens, the HumVee has rescued motorists from ditches and snow drifts, responded to emergency calls and even helped out a tow company.
It is not used for speed enforcement.
The HumVee is tough but slow.
"It's so slow I believe I could actually out run it on my bicycle, " he said.
As the department has seen this winter, speed isn't the issue. It's the vehicle's ability to handle snow and ice that make it an asset.
Dowdney said the only costs the city incurs is maintenance and insurance.
The HumVee can also move the portable generator the city has for emergencies. The generator can be used to provide power at city hall or the water system that serves the small community.
The city is allowed to keep the vehicle free of charge as long as there is a use for it. Through the program used to get the HumVee, Dowdney said it was basically free.
Dowdney said eventually the department would like to get a hard top for the rugged vehicle and possibly get a new paint job.
In the meantime, the HumVee is running just fine.
