With a small team of just 12 men, and only four returning varsity starters, the Versailles Tigers baseball team knew this season would be a struggle.
Perhaps no team has been affected by the weather as much as the Tigers' team.
The team saw the field for the first time on Friday, March 15, meaning all of their practices until then had been indoors. Not exactly ideal conditions to build a baseball team, but the Tigers have made the best of their situation.
The team hit the road on Tuesday, March 18 to take on Skyline in their season opener.
Skyline was the first to get on the board, taking a 2-0 lead as they entered the third inning, but the Tigers quickly answered, taking a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
The Tigers dug themselves in a hole in the fifth, and Skyline would emerge as the victor, scoring four runs in the fourth and another four in the fifth before Versailles would tack on additional two runs before the game ended.
Christian Whittle started the night for the Tigers, striking out four batters, and finishing with a 3.5 ERA, allowing just two earned runs. Dalton York relieved Whittle, finishing with two strikeouts.
The team next faces Smithton on the road on Friday, March 22, if weather permits, before returning for their home opener against Tipton on Monday, March 26.
