No decision was made in the Magruder Limestone, Inc. asphalt plant case in Sunrise Beach.

The village board of trustees tabled the case Feb. 11, requesting a formal explanation from the planning commission on its recommendation regarding the company's conditional use permit application.

It should be back on the agenda for the board's March 11 meeting.

The commission voted in favor of the six-month permit to operate a temporary asphalt plant at its quarry in Sunrise Beach from July-December 2013. The proposed plant would be located in the interior of the quarry located at 12729 N. State Highway 5.

A few area residents opposed to the CUP attended a public hearing held by the commission in January. The commission then researched the company's record in other communities and further questioned Magruder Vice President Dean McDonald at its February meeting before voting to recommend the CUP.

Commissioner Kent Morris commented that asphalt plant operations would be a short term inconvenience for an improvement in the area's infrastructure.

McDonald filed the application after the company was awarded a construction contract from the Missouri Department of Transportation to resurface nearly 28 miles of Highway 5 from the Sunrise Beach area north to Versailles and about three miles of Highway 54 in Camden County. The contract includes adding four foot paved shoulders to Highway 5 in the resurfacing area where they are currently lacking shoulders.

Due to the location of the quarry and proposed asphalt plant in the project area, Magruder offered significant savings to the state for the work.

The motion that was approved by the Sunrise Beach Planning Commission included stipulations on the permit, including proper traffic warnings at the project and at the quarry where truck traffic will increase, more specific operational times and asphalting the entrance to the quarry to cut down on dust. The commission also recommended that the permit only include the job listed on the application.
