While the Lake has changed over the years, Sunset Inn Resort still has the same small-resort charm and offers the perfect setting for family vacations. In 1974, owners Lee and Patty Brenon began operating the waterfront resort located at the 33-mile marker. At the time, it was a four-cabin property; however, over the years land was purchased and the property was expanded upon. It was a family endeavor and all of the Brenon's children — Mindy, Aimee and Bruce leant a helping hand.
Bruce moved away in 1998 to travel the world working in the entertainment industry. He spent six years as a model for such companies as Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hanes and Budweiser. He met his wife, Sarah, in 2000 and together they later ran a successful landscape construction company and holiday lighting company in southern California before they were presented with the opportunity to come back to the Lake and take over the property in 2011.
"My father had managed the property for the past 36 years and was ready to take a step back and enjoy the fruits of his labor. He had a discussion with me to either put the resort on the market or give me the opportunity to manage the property. After many discussions with my wife and family, we decided this would be a great opportunity to move back to the Midwest and give my kids the childhood that I once had as a child," Bruce said.
The new owners continue to make improvements to the resort which now has 12 units offering two and three bedroom kitchenette cabins, all with a Lake view. Later this year, a conference and meeting room that will hold approximately 80 guests is scheduled to be completed. The venue will be perfect for a small business to have retreats as well as for weddings, group reunions and in the summer be used as a movie theater for kids.
Many guests have been coming to Sunset Inn Resort for 20 even 30 years, and those that came as children are now bringing their own kids.
"We create lifelong memories for families and their children," Bruce said. "The small resort is a dying breed, but one we think is very important in bringing families together and enjoying the Lake the way it was meant to be — spent with your family."
