Joe Gilbert Jr, a Brunswick native, passed away on February 7, 2013 in Annapolis, Maryland after a lengthy illness of Alzheimer’s. Born in Brunswick on March 31, 1927 to Joe Bailey Gilbert (Sr) and Rebecca Smith Gilbert, “Joe Bailey” attended school in Brunswick and graduated from Brunswick High in 1945.
In addition to learning boating on the Grand and Missouri rivers, during his school years Joe became fascinated with aviation and hoped to fly in the Army. He served in Germany during the Allied occupation following World War II. On his return from Germany and discharge from the military in 1946, he attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and was a member of the Magnificent Seven and earned a degree in Business Administration. Returning to Brunswick after graduation, he took over the Gilbert family farming, GMC/Pontiac automotive business, Gilbert Motor Oil and liquor store interests which he conducted until the mid 70's.
He retired to the Lake of the Ozarks in 1988 but never retired from being an entrepreneur building L&S Truck selling concrete mixers and semi-trucks nationally and internationally until 2008. He was an active member of the Christian Church while living in the Brunswick and a member of the Methodist Church in Osage Beach.
While in Brunswick he was a member of The Brunswick Club as well as the later Brunswick Chamber of Commerce and American Legion.
In Osage Beach he was active in local affairs including the Arts Council. A licensed pilot and avid water-sportsman, after retirement Joe and family members traveled the world, visiting and cruising to a variety of destinations on 7 continents. A devoted animal-lover, he especially enjoyed photo expeditions and white-water rafting including the most memorable of his travels, an African safari and rafting expedition on the Zambezi River.
Preceded in death by a son, Joe Bailey Gilbert III and by wife of 47 years Frances Marie, Joe Bailey Gilbert, Jr is survived by his wife Lee of Osage Beach, by his son Richard of Los Angeles California, daughter Christina of Annapolis Maryland, and grandsons Joshua and Jesse, also of Los Angeles.
Services will be at Breshears Memorial Chapel, Brunswick, MO on Saturday February 16, 2013, 1:30 p.m. Reverend Lanny Lybarger officiating. Joe’s ashes will be interred at Elliott Grove Cemetery following with Military Honors provided by Rucker-McAllister Post # 7 American legion.
