Do you know where your child is? Parents of hundreds of Camdenton students ranging from elementary school to high school know exactly where their child is every day after school. They are at school. Camdenton R-III After-school Services, funded by 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant through Mo. Dept. of Education, offers classes ranging from PASS, an enrichment program for students who need extra academic help, Laser Robotics, CSI, Culinary and much more.
According to school officials, providing a safe learning environment during key after-school hours has potential to decrease chances of teen crime.
"Statistics show that youth that have no mentoring system or no adult supervision in those in between hours of 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. are at great risk of questionable behavior, risky behavior. Sometimes they just get in trouble because they don't have a positive role model and so a program like this offers us a great opportunity to try to be there for some of our youth exactly in that time frame," Camdenton Police Chief Laura Wright said.
After-school services have grown tremendously since the program began over 10 years ago. Lake Sun is kicking off a new series, "Imagination in Action: A closer look at Camdenton R-III After School Services." Lake Sun will be featuring programs through print, photographs and video throughout the rest of the school year. Keep up with the Lake Sun and Lake News Online to find out what is happening after school.
