  • In honor of MLK Day of Service, PAVE AmeriCorps is partnering with Eldon School District programs, community services and businesses to plan Eldon’s first Family Fitness Event from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Upper Elementary gym.
Leigh Ann Toalson, PAVE AmeriCorps*VISTA leader, reports, “We are pleased to be working with L.E.A.P. (Learning Enriched Afterschool Program), Parents As Teachers, Lake Regional Hospital, Lake Regional Rehab-Eldon, Miller County Health Center, Eldon Drug Company, Hy-Vee, and Compass Prevention to provide this fun and active event.”
Planned activities include fun ways to be active and fit such as Tai Kwon Do, beginning youth golf, Wii stations, and the 4-minute workout. Health and wellness issues will also be addressed, such as glucose testing, BMI checks, height and weight, nutrition information, and nutritious snacks. The event is free and there will be a drawing for door prizes.”
The Family Fitness Event is being scheduled in conjunction with the L.E.A.P. Afterschool program. L.E.A.P. students will rotate through activities during normal L.E.A.P. hours. The event will be open to the general public, all ages, from 6–7 p.m.
PAVE Program Director Daphney Partridge, said, “The idea for a fitness event originated in a brainstorming session for the 2013 MLK Day of Service which is promoted annually by CNCS (Corporation for National and Community Service) to make it “a day on, not a day off.”
It is an opportunity for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. Because physical fitness is both a national and local issue, affecting the economy through loss of productivity and healthcare costs, PAVE AmeriCorps chose to focus on fitness this year. Reaching out to potential partners who are also concerned about fitness and health has resulted in this first Family Fitness Event.”
