Lake Regional Hospitalist Asif Tahir, M.D., has successfully completed the requirements for certification in hospice and palliative care from the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Tahir, who also is board certified in internal medicine, joined Lake Regional in 2008. He received his medical degree from Rawalpindi Medical College, Punjab University and completed his residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, New York.
“People are living longer, but with a longer lifespan comes more chronic problems,” said Dr. Tahir, who treats hospitalized patients at Lake Regional, and is a certified wound care specialist. “There is an increased need for more palliative care services, especially for advanced heart failure, COPD and terminal cancer patients. These services include pain management, bereavement counseling, and dignity care.”
The Lake Regional Health System Palliative Care team provides comprehensive health care services for patients and families to help relieve suffering, and improve quality of life.
The team, which includes the palliative care nurse, chaplain, dietitian, social worker and physician, helps accomplish goals that are determined by the patient.
“As part of the palliative care team, I saw a need for a board certified doctor to lead it,” Dr. Tahir said. “Now, with this certification, we are hoping to expand our palliative care services to better meet the needs of patients at Lake Regional.”
Board certification is the industry benchmark by which physician quality is measured and recognized.
Physicians who successfully complete their certification requirements demonstrate the currency of their knowledge and their ability to use it by passing a rigorous examination.
The American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine works to enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care. Physicians periodically must complete requirements to maintain their certification.
The medical staff at Lake Regional Health System includes more than 100 providers who offer primary and specialty care for area residents and visitors. For more information or to view physician profiles, visit lakeregional.com/physicians.
