  • In the midst of an ongoing investigation and animal cruelty allegations, a remodel of the Eldon Animal Shelter continues. What Mayor Ronald Bly referred to as "a several thousand dollar remodel" has been ongoing for about three months.
Bly credits the previous city administration for the current animal shelter issues. "The previous administration didn't handle the shelter like it should have," he said. A Department of Agriculture inspection in Oct. 2011 sparked the need to make changes to the shelter. According to Bly, little was done before he took office in April which is why the city is working quickly to resolve the issues. "We've worked to try to get the problems fixed," he said. "We are now playing catch up."
New metal on the walls, a new ceiling, new lighting, renovated flooring, new cages, new fencing, a new heating system and more are on the to-do list. The work inside the shelter is moving along, but weather is becoming an issue. A setback with the floors will cause the staff to redo the newly painted floors.
The temperature must be warm enough to let the paint set up right. Lately, it has been too cold to go ahead with more painting. Fencing, new cages and outdoor run extensions are also on the list, but cannot be completed under the current weather conditions.
Dogs have been transported to other animal facilities across the nation while renovations are underway. City officials said that they do not plan on picking up anymore animals until the remodel is complete.
The cat room was remodeled and is currently occupied by many cats awaiting adoption. Many items including the cages in the cat room were donated from Jeff City's animal shelter which recently went through a remodel, as well.
The city of Eldon has a deadline of January 31 to complete all of the mandated renovations. Mayor Bly is confident that all the projects will be completed on time.
