*Editor’s Note: This opinion is in response to a Lake View published Dec. 27 titled “Progressives and the unions,” by Jane Boyce.
On behalf of the progressives/the unions we would both wish for you to simply thank us for all the benefits and blessings you and 98% of Americans currently enjoy as the direct result of the union's and Progessive's hard work, tears and bloodshed over the years. You should simply thank Progressives/unions and then be on your way stopping to beg the forgiveness of every Progressive/union member you pass for writing such poisonous opinions which completely ignore all of their excellent accomplishments.
Whenever you enjoy a weekend with your family, you need to thank unions. Every American that only works 40 hours per week (and anyone receiving overtime pay) owes a debt of gratitude to unions. Anyone whom works in a safe business/factory/industrial setting is indebted to the hard work of unions. All those folks belonging to America's middle class (98%) owe a debt of gratitude to unions. Children laboring long hours and very often dying or being crippled in unsafe workplaces are a thing of the past due to unions and Progressive lawmakers.
There have been more killings, death and violence committed by huge companies, huge corporations and big business against union workers than has ever been perpetrated by unions upon "Scabs" or big business management.
You mention Peabody Coal Company: before unions, coal mining companies were in fact enslaving their workers by means of company owned stores that only accepted "Script" money which was issued by the coal company against the future earnings of the workers. The coal miners were forced to pay the high cost of doing business at the company owned store because they were the only stores willing to extend credit to the low income miners. The company provided living shacks for miners and their families at a higher rent because in many cases there weren't any rental properties near the mines.
So, in essence, miners at Peabody Coal Company and nearly all of America's coal mining company's operated overt virtual slavery/indentured servitude of their workers.
A miner could never simply quit his job because the company would immediately kick the worker's family out of their company-owned homes and they would also immediately call in the miner's credit balance at the company owned store. Coal companies also very often kicked out miner's families and called in store debts if a worker was injured on the job (and could not work) or killed in their mines.
Page 2 of 2 - Jane, I am willing to bet that you or your significant other are collecting or will someday collect your Social Security and Medicare benefits when you reach the age of entitlement.
To me, this is the height of hypocrisy. A recent study concluded that as many as 80% of Down Syndrome fetuses are aborted by their parents in America each year. This means that there are Right-To-Life folks, Republicans, Conservatives, Religious Folks, Tea Party Members and Libertarians aborting their pregnancies when Down Syndrome is discovered while still in the womb. This is just another glaring hypocrisy committed by the folks you claim to write opinions for.
If this country ever loses unions, if collective bargaining ever disappears this country will once again be at the mercy of big business.
Yes....... nearly ALL unions vote for Democrats for the very same reasons minorities vote for Democrats, we are the only party which addresses their concerns and safeguards their rights. Since you and other Republicans, Tea Party members, Right Wingers or Libertarians are perceived as anti-working class, of course the unions consistently vote Democratic.
With the Republicans recently passing the Corporate Donations Law, now corporations are considered, "People" and you guys will surely surpass in donations what unions now donate to the Democrats.
I say that unions are necessary to protect worker's rights. I say that publicly denouncing Progressives simply means you and your cohorts are in favor of the status quo, willing to take this country backwards.
Jane, you, Republicans, Right Wingers, Conservatives, Tea Party members stand for repeating the mistakes of the past, holding this country back, while the Progressives, Liberals, Democrats are always looking forward, shaping America's future and moving us forward as a people and nation.
The majority of Americans are all looking forward towards a bold new future and they are tired of the stagnation, stalemate of the Republican Party. As far as your insights into the intentions of the forefathers I disagree with your assertions, they were and always will epitomized progress.
