Today I am a Republican, a Tea Party Member, Religious, Conservative, part of the Right as well as a Liberal, Progressive, Democrat.
Today I stand with anyone and everyone from every political ilk, opinion and persuasion. I stand with all those whom regardless of their political affiliation have had the courage to do the right thing by calling for an assault weapons ban, tougher gun laws, a ban on extended capacity magazines and clips. I am proud of those who have finally joined with me and a mourning nation in declaring, "Enough is enough, we must do something to stem the gun violence in America."
Doing the right thing is hardly ever the easiest path in life. If it were easy everyone would always choose the right thing and the right path. Stopping the sale, the ownership of military-type weapons, ammunition and extended capacity gun ammunition clips/magazines by private citizens time has finally come. I know it will happen in baby steps, but it must and it will happen eventually.
For too long now, the NRA and a very small percentage of assault weapon owners in America have confused the issue of the second amendment to the Constitution. The right to bear arms doesn't and has never meant the right to possess weapons capable of slaughtering your fellow Americans on a massive scale.
There is no fine line between owning a weapon for personal defense or hunting and assault weapons designed for maximum killing potential of large numbers of human beings. No gray area, no ambiguity, no way did the authors/signing forefathers of the Constitution intend for weapons capable of slaughtering masses of helpless, defenseless, little children be allowed in the hands of private citizens.
Some are going to call for the arming of every school teacher, every citizen as the answer to the problem. Of course anyone with half a brain will see that would simply escalate and exasperate the problem, not solve it.
There are going to be those that will claim that doing background checks on every gun buyer, mandating that every gun purchased be registered, waiting periods, that requiring gun licenses is somehow un-American. The fact is that NOT implementing these requirements to safeguard our children and citizens is reckless, irresponsible and in the minds of a majority of Americans, un-American.
The time has come for intelligent, sensible, patriotic Americans to step up, get off the fence and declare publicly that assault weapons are good for nothing but killing large numbers of their fellow Americans. Now is the time to take a stand and take back this country from folks that would make this nation more dangerous by proliferating more deadly weapons to be used against children and defenseless citizens. We must demand that our lawmakers put aside their petty political affiliations and aspirations for the good of the people, our country.
Page 2 of 2 - If these new measures save one child, prevent one insane person from attaining an assault weapon, prevent one more attack on a school, I say it is worth it. I say if a few American citizens are denied the joy of marching around wearing military camouflage, carrying a military style assault weapon and pretending to be a soldier, so be it.
Now is the time for action and now is the time for all Americans to join together and say in one undeniable voice, "No more killing of our children (our citizens) by madmen carrying assault weapons.......ENOUGH!"
