Co-Mo Electric Cooperative is trying to help its members and employees with their Christmas shopping while providing a boost to the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri's Buddy Pack program.
On the heals of a successful Gourd Wars pumpkin decorating contest that raised nearly $500 for the program that helps feed hungry kids, the cooperative is launching a gift basket promotion entitled "Baskets for Food." Each participating department is assembling and decorating a gift basket based on a theme of its choosing. Members and employees will then buy raffle tickets for $5 each in an attempt to win a basket. All proceeds are going to the Buddy Pack program.
The gift-basket promotion is the brainchild of Co-Mo Receptionist and Buddy Pack Coordinator Rachel Thowe.
"This is a time of year when most of us will be sitting down to big holiday meals with lots of food, and it can be easy to forget that there are little kids out there who won't be," she said. "We as a cooperative can help change that, even if it's in just a small way."
Raffle tickets for the gift baskets will be sold at Co-Mo offices in Tipton and Laurie until Dec. 14. Winners will be announced Dec. 17.
Approximately 55,000 students in The Food Bank's service area qualify for free and reduced-priced school meals. For many of them, breakfast and lunch at school offer the only source of reliable nutrition and they are at risk of hunger over the weekend. To alleviate this risk, The Food Bank partners with elementary schools to provide Buddy Packs to school children. Buddy Packs are backpacks filled with kid-friendly, nutritious food that students take home over the weekend or holiday periods to supplement their meals when there is not enough for them to eat at home. After the weekend, the kids bring their empty Buddy Pack back to school to be refilled by local volunteers.
During the 2012-13 school year, the Buddy Pack program will help feed more than 6,700 children each week.
