QUESTION: Recently, the Osage Beach Board of Aldermen expressed interest in addressing road concerns in west Osage Beach. Can much be done at this point to save business in that part of Osage Beach? What actions should the BOA or MoDOT take?
Might be too little, too late
All one has to do is take a look at the closed businesses on that stretch of road to see the impact of the highway. Out of the business, only a few remain. Do I think changing the road would have an impact? Certainly would not hurt. Will it help those who relocated or simply closed: no. They have already suffered the financial impact of a poorly designed expressway.
Though I think the Osage Beach leaders do have a certain amount of culpability here. They should not have waited until all these months later to now cry foul. They should have been proactive from day one and even before the expressway was started, to protect the businesses.
Needs to be better access to the expressway
When the bypass was being pushed, the question was how will this new road impact businesses in Osage Beach. I indicated at that time that it would not be an unmixed blessing. We now see that the western business strip has to some extent been isolated.
Add to this the large expansion at the eastern end of the area has compounded the problem.
There must be a way to make west end access from the by pass easier from both directions. Failing that, the area will wither.
